Somewhere else...
Vulira sat on a rock, legs crossed, casually kicking the top leg a little bit as she watched her friends argue. She sighed and fidgeted with her hair, looking worriedly at the silvering tips. "Come on, guys, let's just go," she said, frustration written all over her face and tone. "We need to get going before the sun comes up or we'll be stuck here until tomorrow night, unless we leave Hallow behind... which we're not doing! And if we wait a day, those zealots might catch up, and then we'd all be in trouble!"
"But we didn't find that mystic!" Dash protested.
"Yeah, because those zealots took him, and he's probably dead!" Hallow growled.
"It doesn't matter anymore," Vulira sighed, hoping to prevent the debate from kicking up again. "It's not the first time we've struck out, and it won't be the last, either. I'm more interested in us getting out of here alive. We don't always have an opportunity like this!" she said, gesturing at the rift a few yards from her rock. The rift was a jagged tear that hung in the air. It wasn't large, and was gradually shrinking. It would be fully closed in a few more days. It was a strange thing, that rift. It was kind of hard to see if you didn't know what you were looking for, which made them dangerous to people who didn't pay attention to where they walked. It looked kind of like a ragged piece of colored cellophane, except if you looked closely, you realized you weren't seeing the local scenery through it. Instead, it was a murky, ever-changing picture, like a distorted slideshow. "We need to go through at the same time, or we won't end up in the same place!" she reminded them.
There was a little more grumbling, but the other two reluctantly joined Vulira in front of the rift. She reached out and took each of their hands. Hallow, her best friend. She smiled slightly at the vampire. And then Dash... her smile slipped and her ears drooped as she thought sadly of what they'd had, but couldn't keep. She couldn't look at him, she didn't want to see the gray in his hair... but her grip on his hand tightened momentarily before relaxing again. Couldn't keep him. Wouldn't have been fair to him. He deserves someone he can grow old with. It was a long time ago, and it was for the best!
With an impatient swish of her tail, Vulira pulled her friends towards the rift. She took a deep breath, and...
Jumped...

Crossing into the portal seems like a cold splash of water. The feeling makes her gasp soundlessly as they are pulled forward. Around them colors of all hues they can see and some they cannot seem to swirl in random patterns. Occasionally an image forms, though they do not seem connected.
A library with a window overlooking a huge mountain range. An endless expanse of petrified trees, charred black. A blood spattered stone floor with a red-haired young man on his knees weeping. A ledge on a tall spire where a blonde boy watches over an impossibly large city. An obsidian fortress in a vast desert.
While she is watching these images, she begins to notice that this trip is becoming especially turbulent. The three are pushed roughly from side to side as if a wind they cannot feel were trying to tear them off course. She has to hold on tighter to make sure their hands are not pulled out of hers. A faint murmur catches her ears, as if someone said something softly. She turns to Hallow to ask what it was, then pauses in confusion. Her Vampire friend's face is crossed with a strange expression, watching the swirling colors as if transfixed.
When she looks at Dash she grows more worried. His head is cocked to the side, as if he is listening to something only he can hear. Neither seems to be aware of her presence any longer. She realizes that it is no longer just the turbulence of their trip threatening to pull their hands apart. They, or something else, is pulling each companion away from her, in a different direction.

Vulira tried to call out to Dash and Hallow, but she couldn't even hear herself. She began shifting her density, increasing it, becoming harder, heavier, trying to make herself an anchor for her friends. It was difficult to do, in this space between worlds. Everything felt slower and faster all at once. The normally fast change in density seemed to take forever, creating the oddest sensation. It was almost painful, feeling her essence changing. She'd never felt it before. It was always so fast, happening in the span of a snap of the fingers! But not this time. She couldn't remember ever trying to do this in the space between, before. She didn't think she'd like to attempt it again in the future, either! She tried to keep a grip on her friends hands as the space between became a veritable maelstrom around her.

As the forces knocking them about increase, Vulira notices that their forward motion has slowed to a crawl, which can't bode well at all. While she feels her density shift, she notices a strange whispering in her ears, as if something has excitedly taken notice of what she is doing.
Our of nowhere, the three come to a complete stop. The turbulence rocking them about is gone, there is no sense of forward motion, or falling, or anything. In fact, she cannot feel the weight of her friend's hands she is clinging to... Vulira looks at her arms in shock and sees that the density of her hands has begun to reverse! She orders her body to stop, to listen to her, but somehow she is not in complete control of what is happening. She watches, still unable to speak in the void, as her hands alone revert back to the density of normal hands, then continue dissipating, becoming less and less dense until her friends simply slip through them and they drift away.
Despite any attempts to grab them, Vulira is fixed at the singular point in the swirling mess of colors about her, while her friends seem to be drawn towards the walls. First Hallow touches a wall, then Dash reaches one with an arm extended as if he were reaching for something. Then, they are simply not there where they once were. Gone.
Control of her hands returns to her, but she realizes the sinking feeling overcoming her is more than just emotional. She is beginning to drop, plummeting straight down through the annoyingly rainbow themed abyss. She knows now something or someone is interfering, she is just not sure how, or why. The colors begin to recede as she drops, til she is left falling into blackness.
Just as suddenly as it began, the falling sensation stops, and she feels solid ground beneath her. The connection with something solid seems to awaken her other senses again, and she realizes she can hear, and see.

Vulira finds herself in a space with a white hue. As her eyes adjust she can tell that it's a room as corners and walls begin to take shape but other than that there aren't any distinguishing features like decorations, furniture, windows, paint, or even a floor. After a moment a tall black wood door with an ornate old looking handle appears. The quiet is disrupted by an echoing voice.
"Well now....aren't you interesting."

The bare white room made Vulira slightly uncomfortable. Her ears lowered and her tail pressed against the back of her legs. Slowly, she began turning her head, looking for the source of the voice. She swallowed hard around the lump in her throat and stayed cautiously silent.

The voice sounds charming and pleasant albeit a bit eerie. "I see in you a vast potential that withers on the vine among the mortals of the world. Your skills are underappreciated there without much of a chance to grow. I will be able to help you with that if you are willing to step outside of what you know as familiar. The only action you must take to further explore my offer is to open the door before you." The door handle rattles slightly.

There is a faint popping sound and on the wall across from the door there is now another, albeit less impressive looking door. This door is a bit rickety, made from old, rough wood with a few nails falling out. It is smaller than the other door, only coming up to slightly higher than the opposite door. On the wall beside it sits a black slate, as if one you could write on with chalk.
While she looks, writing begins appearing on the slate with a faint scratching noise, as if an invisible hand were etching words there.
OR YOU COULD NOT DO THAT

Vulira's brow furrowed as she looked around the room.
"I'm always stepping outside what is familiar," she answered. "But who are you? What happened to my friends? Are they OK?" she asked, worry apparent in her voice.
Vulira's head whipped around, ears pricking upright at the sound of the chalk scratching on the board. Her tail twitched and her frown deepened. "Is this a riddle, then?" she asked, "Choose a door and choose my fate?" One ear flicked back as her gaze roved around the room again. "More divine powers, come to use me?" she asked, her tone a mingling of annoyance and resignation. "Do I get any clues besides the appearance of the doors?" she asked grimly, crossing her arms.

"I mean no harm. My intention is only to assist you in unlocking your true potential if you unlock my door this will be available to you and more. Ah yes! You do not have to worry I can ensure the safety of your friends. I myself am in need of a friend and it is my hope that we can have such a partnership. I sincerely believe that we can help one another in our endeavors." The tone of the voice seemed excited and hopeful with just a tinge of loneliness. The door rattles again a little more insistently.

There is a bit of a squeaking and the black slate is wiped clean.

Vulira raised an eyebrow at the chalkboard. She dissipated into smoke and drifted closer to the slate, then reformed. "So then what are you 'offering' me?" she asked curiously, putting her chin across folded hands. "What is it that you want?" She glanced back towards the first door. "And most importantly, does my choice, whatever it turns out to be, in any way effect what happens to my lost friends?" Her eyes flicked back and forth between the first door and the slate a few times.

"False? How dare you! You have no right to cast doubt upon my intentions! I am wounded immensely by such an accusation!" The tone had changed to growling and indignant and it was clear he was no longer addressing her. When he spoke to Vulira again his tone was back to pleasant. "Now then as I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted...I can help you grow stronger. Through working with me you could achieve your dreams in life and no longer have to wander aimlessly. You could have a place to call home that is your own that no one will take from you or take you away from."

THEY HAVE MADE A CHOICE AS WELL.
THEY ARE ELSEWHERE.
The writing on the board offers in explanation about her friends. It pauses a moment as if considering what she asked of it, then the writing is rubbed away and continues.
I CAN OFFER YOU NO AID.
BUT...
YOU MAY BE ABLE TO AID THIS DYING WORLD.

Vulira's ears both pricked up as she stared at the slate. She was quiet for a long moment, thinking. Finally, she dissipated into smoke again and reformed back in the center of the room. She crossed her arms under her bosom and stared upwards into empty whiteness for a few seconds. Then she took a deep breath.
She looked at the first door. "I don't know who you are, voice, and I definitely have no desire for your enmity. I would take your offer of friendship seriously, if you truly wish it," she said kindly, "but I don't think I can accept your offer, tempting though it may be. In fact, that's basically why I can't accept it. I know temptation when I see it. There are many of my kind who exist solely to provide temptation to lead the unwary astray. Now, I'm not saying that's what you're doing!" she added hastily, shaking her head slightly. "You promise a home that cannot be taken from me, but that's a promise you cannot keep. I have a home. Nobody took it from me, nor took me from it. Well, OK, somebody did... but that somebody was me. So, you can see, promising that wouldn't happen again has some rather... hmm... unpleasant implications." "I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt; you probably didn't know it was my choice," she said, nodding. She dropped her arms, and her tail swayed gently back and forth. "I appreciate your offer to help me. But the other one has asked for my help. If you truly want to help me, there will be a chance to do so later. Not like I'm going to get old first!" Vulira joked, smiling awkwardly. She cleared her throat. "Anyway... you can always help me later, but if someone needs my help now, that probably can't wait," she said hoping to let the unknown entity down gently.
She dissipated into smoke and drifted over to the door by the slate and reformed once more. "No hard feelings, OK?" she said over her shoulder in a hopeful tone, and reached out and grabbed the handle.

"I am not finished with my offer yet. What if you were not the only one who could not age? What if some else might find himself the holder of immortality and if that were to occur there would be no reason the both of you could not be together. Dash mayhaps? Is that not something that you want?" The voice paused but spoke again when she put her hand on the handle of the other door. "Come to me Vulira....do not make this mistake." When he says her name Vulira notices a strange feeling come over her that she can't describe or place.

At this, the slate on the wall promptly does something it had not shown itself capable of before, and slides up the wall, well above the door so it is towering over the rest of the room before changing its text to
SILENCE YOU
After which, the board lowers itself so it is directly before Vulira before writing
THE CHOICE IS YOURS TO MAKE
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The handle to the small door turns easily in her grasp. The door is low enough she will have to duck or crawl through if she continues. As the door opens a crack, she feels a warm breeze. It carries with it the scent of animals, fallen leaves, the wilds of a forest.

Vulira flinched at the mention of Dash. She looked over her shoulder, expression darkening. "Now I know you're just trying to tempt me!" she said, sounding a bit angry, but mostly sad. "Dash and I ended a long time ago, and he already has someone else; has for over a decade! And even if that wasn't the case, I can't make a decision about his mortality for him! That would be immensely unfair to him. He would have to choose that for himself. Just because I'm a demon... doesn't mean I'm selfish. Trying to appeal to my greed is the wrong tactic." Vulira looked back towards the doorway in front of her. "I choose to help, rather than be helped," she said softly, "and I hope you can respect that and not hold it against me. But, if not, then you show your true colors and I'll know your offer of friendship was never true." She dissipated into smoke and drifted through the open door.

As she mistforms herself through the door, she thinks she hears a whispering, as if the voice were trying to reply but cut off as she stepped through the door. The smell of the forest is strong now, and she thinks she can hear voices of people. There is the brief sensation of her sight going black as it did when she fell into the room, and the suddenly she feels her feet connect with solid ground and a vision of dappled sunlit forest materializes before her.
